webmate Release 2024.1.0

Happy new year everyone! webmate 2024.1.0 is our way to celebrate the new year. This release focuses on improving user experience both for heavy and casual users of webmate:

Settings

Since the beginning, webmate was built to be highly configurable. Different organizations have different requirements. Over the years, we built a rich set of features that can be customized to fit different use-cases. In the past, these configurations were only accessible to our staff. With this release, a large part of these settings can now be configured by administrators in webmate. These settings are accessed through a whole new section in the admin area.

Here is a short excerpt of all the things that can be configured:

  • Timeouts for consoles and idle devices
  • Lifetimes for passwords and invite tokens
  • Password lifetime and policies

UX Improvements

We are always busy collecting feedback from our users to improve the usability of webmate. This release contains the following noteworthy improvements:

  • Slot Administration: Working with slots that are assigned to many projects was very painful. We improved a better component to fulfill this job and made some smaller improvements to the user interface.
  • Project overview: If a user only has access to one project, we skip over the project overview. That’s one click saved every time you log into webmate.
  • New filter option for public cloud devices: There is a new filter cutting-edge that only shows devices with the latest OS version available in the public cloud.

Support for OIDC Implicit Flow in Single Sign-On

This release adds support for another single sign-on authentication flow called Implicit Flow. Previously, webmate tsupported only OIDC Auth Code Flow which requires communication with a server-side component. Implicit Flow is more flexible, but also a little less secure. If you are interested in setting up single sign-on, please contact support.

Bugfixes

  • We have improved the error handling when a user tries to access a resource but does not have permission to access it. Instead of an endless spinner, webmate now displays a meaningful error page.
  • Actions associated with storychecks are now displayed correctly in all cases.
